The History of Jerusalem Baptist Church

In the year of 1879 the Jerusalem Baptist church was established in Houston County Georgia under the leadership of Rev. Davis alone with some of our fore parents saw that worship service were needed in the vicinity, in which the building construction now stand they began worship service under a bush harbor some years later.  God bless the small congregation and they were able to build a small wood construction building.  Rev. Davis, Pastored for a number of years then he was followed by the following ministers:

Rev. Robert Berry, later Rev. Matt Duffie, Rev. G.G. Taylor, Rev. Monroe Gibson, Rev. George Jackson, Rev. E.D. White, Rev. Aaron Calloway. They all served well wherever they were able at that time.  Then the membership began to grow and more officers were added.  The progress began, Rev. Bennie Johnson was called, and under his leadership they had new weatherboard put on the choir stand, built a pool.  Rev. Johnson served well.  The Rev. H.L. Lindsey were called under his leadership gas heater were installed, the choir stand were changed, several things were done.  Rev. Robert B. Brooks were called, and a new pump was put in, advance parking space around the church was made, new pulpit furniture, bathrooms were install, and sand floors.  Two officers were ordained and are now serving under Rev. Brooks.  The Deacons are as follows:  Deacon T.Z. Collins, Chairman, Deacon George Halliburton, Assistant Chairman, Deacon Chatman Curtis, Deacon Eddie Tharpe, Deacon Neal Tharpe, and Deacon James Haslem.  Our deceased Deacons are as follow: Deacon Abe Ivory, Deacon Henry Childs, Deacon Luke Jackson Sr., Deacon Ed Tharpe, Deacon Willie Johnson, Deacon Lucious Richardson, Deacon Leon Jackson, Deacon Sip Tharpe, Deacon Berry Tharpe, Deacon Richard Lamar, Deacon Jim Mason, Deacon Earvin Ruthford, Deacon Joe Stubbs, Deacon Neal Hodges, Deacon Thomas Ruthford, Deacon Hayward Jolly, Deacon Alfred Curtis, Deacon Johnnie Cater, Deacon Jim Hoss, Deacon Ivory, Deacon I.P Ivory, Deacon Calvin Jordan.  Serving in the year of 1984 the officers are: Rev. R. B. Brooks, Pastor, Deacon T.Z. Collins, Chairman, Sister Mable Jackson, Secretary, Sister Louise Meadow, and Assistant Secretary.

Rev. Robert Brooks Jr. died in 1998 after a many years of service to Jerusalem Baptist Church; he left under his leadership Bro. George Halliburton as Chairman, Bro. Cornell McCaa-Assistant Chairman, Deacon T.Z. Collins, Deacon Sylvester Turner, Deacon Eddie Tharpe, Bro. James Davis.

In 1998 Rev. Kelson Brooks was voted in as Pastor and under his leadership numerous of member have joined and rejoined the church, he has done things to help beautify the church exterior as well as interior.  The bathroom has been enlarged, a porch was added, an inside baptism pool has been installed, the pulpit has been redone, a steeple put on top, and siding has been put around the church and bible rack on the seats, installed more deacons and much more.

The theme and philosophy of Rev. Kelson Brooks minister is all about brotherly love, he belief that love can and will conquer all in the heart of man if only he believes and love his fellowman as God has love us. I John 4:7,8 says beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. Romans 12:9-10 says Let love be with dissimulation.  Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.  Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love, in honour preferring one another.  Truly I have seen that in Rev. Brooks, others have tried to put him down but still treat them with love and affection knowing him being a child of God that the people of this world can’t do him any harm.

As of this date June 20, 2004 under the leader of Rev. Kelson Brooks, we have lost Deacon T.Z. Collins and Deacon Eddie Tharpe. Serving, is our Youth Minister Rev. James Haslam, Chairman is Bro. George Halliburton, Assistant Chairman Deacon Connell McCaa, Deacon Sylvester Turner, Deacon Kelly Dawsey, Deacon Douglas King, Deacon James Davis, Secretary Sis. Faye Jones.
