We have all heard the stories of how slavery was ended in 1865. Many people do not realize or do not want to talk about it, slavery existed in the south until the beginning of WWII.  I am talking about out-and-out slavery. I am talking about people being kidnapped or tricked and then held against their will. People who must work every day long hours or be beat. I am talking about people who are given no money for their labors. People who are bought and sold.

A book by Douglas Blackmon outlines how blacks in the south were forced into slavery by the judicial system.  The outline of the book can be found at the following link (
http://www.slaverybyanothername.com/the-book/).

On your research for Ike Ivery, remember to check the criminal records in Alabama and Georgia as numerous blacks were arrested and charged under false pretenses.  To pay off fines the men were provided to wealthy companies as forced labor.

This page includes links to interviews and videos to the book above that outlines the method of slavery.
